EIC Accelerator for Irish Companies

Irish companies are eligible for EIC Accelerator if they are innovation driven SMEs or small mid caps with a deep tech project, a credible team and global scale up ambitions. Detailed eligibility depends on company profile and call conditions.

Typical eligibility profile

• Organisation type
  • For profit SMEs registered in an EU Member State, including Ireland, are the core target.
  • Small mid caps can participate under specific conditions, particularly in energy intensive or strategic sectors.
• Project characteristics
  • Deep tech or highly innovative solution with strong IP or defensible know how.
  • Technology validated in a relevant environment, now needing further development, piloting, clinical or regulatory work.
  • Clear potential for large, international markets and strong European impact.
• Risk and funding need
  • Risk profile too high for banks and most private investors to fund full scale up alone.
  • Need for significant funding over a long horizon before revenue inflection.
• Team and capacity
  • Experienced leadership and technical teams capable of delivering a substantial work programme.
  • Governance and financial management capacity suitable for EU level grants and equity.

FI Group IE tests these criteria early so you do not waste cycles on calls where the fit is marginal.

EIC Accelerator can be transformative, but it also introduces portfolio, governance and timing risks for Irish CFOs. These need to be quantified upfront and managed deliberately.

Major risk areas

• Low win rates
  • Success rates in some calls can be below 10 per cent. You must treat EIC as a portfolio play, not a guaranteed line item.
• Co funding and working capital
  • Even with high grant intensity, significant co funding and pre financing are required.
  • Payment schedules and equity timing may not align perfectly with project cash burn.
• State aid and double counting
  • Costs funded by EIC may need to be partially or wholly excluded from national R&D tax credit or grant claims.
  • Poor modelling can breach aid ceilings or create audit exposure.
• Governance and audit burden
  • Horizon Europe level reporting on costs, time, procurement and IP is non trivial.
  • Misalignment between EIC documentation and Irish tax records creates unnecessary risk.
• Dilution and valuation
  • Equity terms must fit group capital strategy and investor expectations.
  • Future rounds need to be structured around EIC participation, not constrained by it.
